DTG printing: direct to garment

DTG (direct to garment) printing works like a high quality inkjet printer for fabric. It is ideal for detailed artwork, photos and one-off t-shirts.

What is DTG printing?

In DTG printing, textile ink is printed directly into the fabric. Because the ink soaks in, the finished print feels soft to the touch.

Our printer uses industrial Epson print heads. It lays down a white base and full colour in a single pass, and can print text as small as 12 point.

When to choose DTG

What DTG printing does best

  • Detailed artwork and photographs with lots of colours
  • Soft fades and changes in opacity, which DTF cannot reproduce as well
  • A soft feel, because the ink becomes part of the fabric
  • One-offs and small runs, with no screens, film or setup costs

Screen printing needs a separate screen for every colour. Each one is coated, dried, exposed to UV light and washed out before printing. DTG skips all of that, which is why a single t-shirt is good value.

Why printing on white costs less

On a white cotton garment we print straight onto the fabric, so the ink dyes the cotton.

Dark garments take more work. We first apply a pretreatment and cure it, then lay down a white layer for the colours to sit on, a bit like primer on a car.

DTG or DTF?

We use both digital methods. DTF is more resistant to fading and is now our main process for online orders. DTG gives a softer feel and handles fades better. We pick the one that suits your design, or you can tell us your preference.

DTG printing questions

Is there a minimum order for DTG printing?

No. There are no screens or film positives to pay for, so you can order a single garment.

How small can text be?

Our DTG printer can print text down to 12 point. Bear in mind that thin parts of a font need to be clear enough to read.

Will a DTG print fade?

DTG inks are water based, so they fade gradually over many washes. Wash at 30 degrees or below, avoid tumble drying and do not iron on the print. We keep your design on file if you want a fresh one.

Can I order DTG printing online?

Yes. Design your own garment online and we will choose the best digital process for your design.
